Current Position: Head Swimming Coach, Scottish Institute of Sport and Scottish National Team Coach
Previous Positions: Head Coach, City of Birmingham
Coaching Qualifications: I have the ASA coach certificate which was a great experience run by coach Bill Furness
British National Champions coached: Adam Ruckwood won the nationals a couple of times when I was in Birmingham
Other National Champions coached: In America my athletes won the US nationals 37 times, this includes a few relays. Some of my Canadian athletes won up there a couple of times as well. My swimmers have set 4 American records in individual events 2 short course and 2 long course.
Major Championship Medallists coached: 1 silver and 2 bronze at World Champs and 1 Olympic gold medal (Nelson Diebel). In other meets like Pan Pacs, Pan Ams and other USA competitions my kids have won 6 gold, 6 silver and 4 bronze.
Other International swimmers coached: Some of the swimmers that I have been fortunate enough to work with and learn from include: Royce Sharp, Nelson Diebel, Barbara Bedford, Greg Burgess, Stephen Clarke, Nikki Dryden, Allison Wagner, Anthony Nesty, Nicole Haislett, Adam Ruckwood, Suki Brownsden and Helen Slatter.
Other Coaching Achievements: None
Representative Coaching Honours: Coach on Great Britain World championship team in 1998, Coach on England Commonwealth team in 1998, US National team coach 6 times.
Coaching Influences: My coaching influences were my personal coaches Dick Shoulberg and Frank Keefe as well as the great international figures of the late 70s and 80s like: Mark Schubert, PaulBergen, Bill Sweetenham, Tamas Szechy, Laurie Lawrence, Jon Urbancheck, Randy Reese and Dick Jochums.
Favourite Coaching Resources: If I could only have 1 swimming book it would be Swimming Even Faster by Ernie Maglischo. I log on regularly to a lot of websites. My favorites for info are Swimming science journal (recently stopped), Scotland's own ISBS biomechanics site and the Dutch research site IFKB . I use these because they always have summaries of the research that is written for average people like me. The US Swimming website also has lots of accessible coaching info.
Favourite Coaching Venues: The fastest pool that I have ever been in seems to be the new Sydney pool. The lighting is higher than anywhere I have ever seen.
Most important coaching qualities: The important coaching quality for me is actually two qualities:first is the ability to create a 'feedback loop' with an athlete regarding their training;the second is the ability to inspire them to sacrifice for glory.
Best British swimmer of all time: The greatest British swimmer that I have evr seen is David Wilkie. He was dominating, cutting edge, and versatile. His Montreal swim rocked the world. I remember his IM swims in America as well.
Best Swimmer of all time: The obvious answer to the greatest world swimmer is Mark Spitz but I have always been partial to multi stroke talents so I must remember Tracy Caulkins and Tamas Darnyi.
Ambitions as a coach: My only remaining ambition in swimming is to have an athlete break a long course world record.
