Coaching Influences: Lyn Townesend - my coach 1974-75. There have been many other coaches over the years. When I first started coaching Hamilton Smith, Paddy Garratt and Keith Bewley had a positive influence upon my development and still do to this day. Over the years many others from Chris Nesbit, Chris Martin to Don Talbot and Bill Sweetenham. It is important to me that we always question what we do and how we do it.
Favourite Coaching Resources: Books, results with splits and all other relevant statistics, various websites, other coaches, the telephone and videos.
Favourite Coaching Venues: I don't have one (except I would rather train swimmers in a 50 metre pool).
Most important coaching qualities: Observation and understanding what you have seen. Setting the horizons high and planning the programme for the swimmers to believe they can achieve them.
Best British swimmer of all time: In my opinion, David Wilkie. He believed he could re-write the records and then proved he could. He forced a change in the approach to coaching breaststroke
Best Swimmer of all time: Difficult question. There are many but for me Rolland Mathis for the pleasure he gave me watching him swim.
Ambitions as a coach: To coach a world record holder and Olympic Gold medallist (high horizons). To have a programme that consistently develops swimmers with the skills to achieve the above.
