Edinburgh appoints French coach
Scottish Swimming and City of Edinburgh Swimming today announced the appointment of Frederic Vergnoux as Head Coach at City of Edinburgh Swimming (CES). Vergnoux joins CES from France, where he has coached the country’s number one swimming club, CS Clichy 92, for the past two years. Olympic relay medallist Darian Towsend is amongst Vergnoux’ prodigies, having coached the South African to his first final in the 2003 World Championships that led to the 4 x 100m Freestyle gold in Athens. During his time at CS Clichy 92, Vergnoux was also national coach for Belarus and sights the career progression of double Athens Olympic finalist Alena Popchanka’s as one of his top achievements as a world class swimming coach. In a swimming career spanning 16 years, which has also seen him compete at national level in France, Vergnoux has worked closely on the development and performance of swimmers from the age of 9 years old.  His most recent experience puts him in a strong position to further enhance the results of the Edinburgh club.

Vergnoux is looking forward to his move to Edinburgh. “I am very pleased to be joining CES in January.  I look forward to working with the local Edinburgh clubs and swimmers, the CES executive, the Area Institute Coach, the Institute Coach, and the Scottish Swimming Director of Performance.  Working in collaboration with our partners to bolster the swimmer pathway in the East will be critical to building on the excellent progress to date at CES”.

CES Chief Executive Jamie Edgar commented:  “CES views this appointment as an extraordinary success.  Vergnoux brings a fresh perspective to our programme, and his enthusiasm and creative thinking are clear from the outset.  We heartily welcome Frederic to his new post.” Scottish Swimming Chief Executive, Ashley Howard added “We are delighted to appoint Fred to this key performance post.  City of Edinburgh Swimming is at a pivotal stage in its progression as a club, having initiated a clear track record in performance, and now looking to prove itself as a club that can offer a sustainable outturn of Commonwealth and Olympic medalists.   We believe that Vergnoux is the leader to take CES forward to the next level”. Frederic Vergnoux joins Scottish Swimming on 5 January 2005.

Montreal unable to host 2005 World Championships!
The Government of Quebec in Canada yesterday refused to hand out the extra funds required to host the 2005 World Championships, scheduled to be held in Montreal next July. This will mean the cancellation of the championships in Canada and a new host city to be found. Confusion reigns however as a final decision will not be made until January 18, 2005.  If, as expected, Montreal does withdraw, Long Beach in California could be the substitute as the American city finished second by just one vote when the decision was made by FINA three years ago.  However, reports from Long Beach suggest they will not be able to host it at such short notice and that too many hotel rooms in the city are already booked up.

Baker to shun GB
50m breaststroke world record holder Zoe Baker has declared her intention to swim for New Zealand at future international events and not her home country of Great Britain. "I'm hoping to swim for New Zealand at the FINA World Cup in Berlin in January," she said. "I won't be swimming for anyone else," added the 27 year old. Baker holds citizenship of New Zealand having lived there for several years but it is unclear whether her decision has anything to do with the priority on Olympic events in Britain.

US Olympic Trials round up
The first three days of action at the US Olympic Trials in Long Beach produced two world records and some other fantastic performances. Michael Phelps has entered six events at the meet and took care of his first one, the 400 IM, with a handy world record of 4:08.41, well clear of USC's Erik Vendt in second with 4:14.09. Victory number two came in the 200 freestyle with 1:46.27 but he was pushed close by a fast finishing Klete Keller who swam 1:46.87. With Peter Vanderkaay and Ryan Lochte placing 3rd and 4th in 1:48's America is shaping up a strong looking 4 x 200 relay team that should be able to challenge the Australians. Keller had earlier won the 400 freestyle, smashing Phelps's American record for the event in the process, with a superb time of 3:44.19. In second place, Larsen Jensen swam a very speedy 3:46.56 to book a ticket to his first Olympics. The women's 400 IM saw 15 year old phenom Katie Hoff set a US Allcomers record winning the event in 4:37.67. Hoff is from the same club as Phelps and is now a major podium contender for Athens. Securing her berth on the plane in second place was USC's Kaitlin Sandeno in 4:40.39. One day later and endurance queen Sandeno went one better however, this time winning the 400 freestyle in 4:08.07 with Klete Keller's sister Kalyn making it a family affair with 4:09.78 for second place.
Brendan Hansen became the first American to break one minute for the 100 breaststroke when he demolished the world record to win the event in a stunning 59.30 and making himself a clear favourite for gold in Athens. Mark Gangloff got his hands on the wall in second with 1:00.87 but it was disappointment for one time favourite Ed Moses who was down the field following a 1:02 swim. The women's 100 butterfly was an incredible close affair but it was Rachel Komisarz who got the touch in 58.77 just ahead of veteran Jenny Thompsen in 58.98.
The men's 100 backstroke promised much with a stellar line up of swimmers and did not disappoint. Irvine/Texas swimmer Aaron Piersol was the one who came out on top touching just 0.04 outside the world record of 53.60 held by Lenny Krayzelburg, who just happened to snatch the finger tip touch for second in 54.06. The close racing continued in the women's 100 breaststroke. Four of the field already had 1:07's to their name prior to the start and it was Amanda Beard who grabbed the win and a ticket to her third Olympics in 1:07.64, marginally ahead of Tara Kirk in 1:07.69. Natalie Coughlin showed she is back to her best after the disappointment of 2003 when she fell ill during the World Championships. Coughlin clocked 59.85 to win her first event, the 100 backstroke ahead of Haley Cope in 1:01.24.

Excitement builds as US Olympic Trials nears
The trials for the team to represent America at the Athens Olympic Games begins this week and excitement is building for what is always a very fast meet! Racing gets underway on Wednesday 7th July and lasts for 8 days a purpose built temporary outdoor pool in the city of Long Beach. Of most interest to swimming fans will be the performances of Michael Phelps as he begins his quest for 7 gold medals in Athens. Despite his undoubted brilliance and the high expectations he must first overcome several difficult challenges in the coming days to secure his place on the team. Phelps has entered the 200 free, 200 back and both butterfly and IM races but the likes of Aaron Piersol, Ian Crocker and many others will be determined not to let him have it quite so easy. In other races there will be keen interest in the performances of Natalie Coughlin, Jenny Thompsen, Gary Hall Jnr and Lenny Krayzelburg. Live results will be available from the
Omega Timing site.
